Up Close: Shimano Stradic FC Reels - 23/04/2009

There must be very few anglers unfamiliar with the Stradic moniker, as it is synonymous with Shimano’s top-end reels. New for 2009 is the front-drag Stradic FC series and, as expected, each model more than lives up to expectations.

The popular aluminium double handle is still present, along with the trademark white styling that always makes the Stradics stand out from the rest of the pack. The FCs adhere to Shimano’s SR Concept, which basically sums up a host of reliable high-end features such as HD Gears, Aero Wrap II and a one-piece bail arm. A standout feature is the new AR-C spool. These are double anodized, cold forged with a special V-shaped lip that encourages the line to peel off in smaller hoops, while simultaneously reducing the chances of backlash.

The 2500, 3000S, 4000 and 5000C models are of most relevance to match fishing; the smallest of the four is particularly suitable for float work while the 4000 is the first choice for heavier float and feeder fishing. The 3000S is interesting as it sports a compact body with a lower-capacity shallow spool, which makes it a great all-round choice. The larger 5000C is also worth a second look as it has a similar size body to the 4000 but holds a larger capacity spool, that will be popular for long-range feeder work.

We’ve tested the 3000S reel for a couple of months now and in every situation it has come through with flying colours. We see absolutely no reason why the rest of the family won’t perform just as well so, if you’re after a quality reel that won’t let you down, look no further than these!

MF verdict:

Typical Shimano quality and some of the best reels we’ve tested.
