Fens On Fire!

Final round of pairs league yields more top roach weights.
The final round of the Maver Bait Tech Pairs League has taken place on the River Glen and Town Welland in Spalding this weekend. With previous rounds making headlines due to massive nets of roach, expectations were high for another good match.

For the first time in the series the organisers were able to use both the Town Welland and the River Glen and both venues fished really well.  The match was split 25 pegs on each venue.  The Town Welland was always going to win the match and it didn’t disappoint.  Leading the way was youth international  Alex Bates who caught over 300 roach on bread punch for 31lb 3oz.  Alex was pegged opposite the Poacher pub.  Three pegs upstream towards the town bridge was runner-up Wayne Swinscoe who chased Alex all the way with 30lb 12oz again all roach taken on the bread at five metres.  Third with 27lb 14oz was Dave Burns who lead a string of 20lbs and double figures with his catch of roach again on bread.

Over on the River Glen,  Alistair Ogilvie weighed 18lb 12oz  main up predominantly of roach –  but also including two massive perch for 7lb, the biggest 4lb, an unbelievable fish taken on lob worm.  Rob Wooton ran him close with 17lb 10oz of roach on bread punch.  Third was Mick Dixon with 14lb 15oz of roach on groundbait and pinkie.  A further twelve anglers had double figures on this venue, proving just how consistent it is!

Winning pair on the day was Alistair Ogilvie and Phil Chesterton with 46lb plus.

Over the four match series well over a ton of roach have been caught – showing just how prolific the venue is.  Thanks go to Maver and Bait-Tech for sponsoring the competition with some great prizes and the Fishermans Arms pub for their great hospitality throughout the event.
