Question: Will baits that are clased as summer baits hemp, hard pellets and fishmeal ground bait's still work in the winter for F1's, do you need to feed them in smaller amounts? Liam McCarthy
Match Fishing Says...
High oil pellets are a no-no for winter fishing. They’re too high in feed content but, more importantly, the attractive oils (that make the baits so effective in the first place) won’t release in cold water.
Pellets still work in winter-time, but you’ need to use low oil coarse/carp pellets. For F1 fishing in winter maggots work well, but sometimes pellets can be unbeatable. You’re right in thinking that you need to reduce the amount you’re feeding and as little as four or five micro pellets and a tiny pinch of fishmeal groundbait can be enough to get you a bite when the water’s cold. Try fishing a softened 4mm expander pellet over the top of the feed and make sure you’re using sensitive rigs (when fishing on the pole).
