Veteran team scraps it out with Italy to lead after first day in Portugal.
England has stormed to a first day lead in the Veterans World Championship competition being held this weekend in Portugal.
The team, made up of Joe Roberts, Dickie Carr, Roger Marlow and Terry Lancaster fished a positive match, fighting tooth and nail with an impressive Italian side to take the win. The result after the weigh-in seeing the two teams tie on 11points each, but with the England men taking the top spot on weight.
On the day England’s best performance was put in by Joe Roberts, also of the England team’s Management team along side Dick Clegg, who won his section and took the third highest weight of the match. Behind him Dickie Carr posted a second in section, with Roger Marlow coming third in his section and Terry Lancaster fifth.
The result will see the team go into the second and final day of the competition in good shape for a win, with Joe Roberts looking forward to tomorrow’s action.
“The guys have fished very well today and our tactics have paid off,” Joe told Match Fishing. “We’ve still got plenty more tricks up our sleeve for tomorrow though which will hopefully see us get another good result.”
The veterans competition is taking place on Portugal’s river Mondego in the North West of the country. The anglers are targeting small fish called boga with an average weight of an ounce and a half. Joe’s weight today of just over 3kg was one of only three 3kg plus nets taken, with Joe catching 60 fish for the total.
