Kerry wins Day 1 following a frantic action, but there's still all to play for tomorrow.
Day 1 of the highly-anticipated Drennan Knockout Cup final is over and as predicted the results are close.
The winner on the day is Lee Kerry who stole victory with 144lb 14oz – a weight that only just sneaked victory over Gary Miller’s 134lb 6oz.
Being so close the result leaves the competition wide open for day 2 set to take place on Docklow’s Micky Mouse Lake – a water which will offer a different sort of fishing to today's short pole fish race affair.
To take the first day win Lee put his faith in a meat approach fishing on the deck with a top four kit, where as Gary caught shallow with maggots on a top five. Despite the different approaches and an early burst from Lee the two anglers have been almost fish-for-fish throughout the match.
"It has been a fantastic day, a super-close result and I'm really looking forward to tomorrow,” said Lee. “I'd hoped to have been more than 10lb ahead of Gary going into day two because he'll be hard to beat on the Micky Mouse Lake. I've had a total of 254 fish today - what a superb day's sport!"
Gary added: "I caught well here fishing shallow in practice, so it was really what I came to do. Around 15 fish separated our respective catches today, so Lee's early burst really has made all the difference.
“I'd obviously liked to have been ahead, rather than behind going into tomorrow, but we'll be targeting bigger fish so it really is open to each of us. I think we'd both rather have the open water swim tomorrow, peg 6, but one thing's for sure...I'll give it my all no matter what."
We'll be featuring all of the detailed information on the final, including how each angler caught and a blow-by-blow account of what happened in the December issue of Match Fishing magazine, on sale the last Friday of November. There's also a video account, plus exclusive interviews, that will be available only on this website.
Remember to keep checking back to matchfishingmagazine.com tomorrow for reports of the second and final day’s action of this fantastic competition.
