Local lads take victory as over 100 river anglers hit the bank.
The Wye Team Champs 2011 has been won by a local team, with good weights despite poor river conditions.
Woodys, backed by Woody’s Tackle of Hereford, saw off stiff competition to post a winning total of 37 points, 2points ahead of second placed WB Clarke with 39.
In total 17 teams of six anglers fished (102 anglers in total) on the day, an impressive number for a river match, which could have been even larger except for an organisational error, which saw one team unable to compete.
Low, gin clear and extremely cold, the Wye didn’t look its best for the match. However healthy weights were still posted, with individual winner Steve Mayer fishing for WB Clarke netting 66lb 8oz of chub and barbel – 18lb ahead of second placed D. Rutter with 48lb 10oz.
“There was concern before the match because the river looked terrible, it was so low and clear and the temperature had plummeted,” match organiser Peter Golding told Match Fishing. “Amazingly though it still fished very well and produced a good match for us all. The lowest section winning weight was 20lb 12oz which is pretty good.”
