Big weight breaks previous best on popular commercial venue - in December!
December isn’t usually the time of year for setting commercial fishery match records, but that didn’t stop one angler smashing the five hour record for one of Cambridgeshire’s most popular venues recently.
Tim Dabrowa was fishing a pairs match at Headfen Lakes Fishery at Ely when he set a new best for the venue’s Trevs Lake, netting 92lb 8oz carp and silvers – breaking the previous record set over six hours by nearly 5lb.
Fishing from peg 37 on the lake, Tim employed both method feeder tactics and the pellet waggler to hook into fish from the off as he landed on a tightly packed shoal of fish that were getting their head down ready for the colder weather.
“It was just one of those weekends where everything fell into place for him,” said fishery boss Marcus Bailey. “The fish were grouped together in front of around five pegs in the 30s and they were feeding well, Tim was even catching good carp on the pellet wag at just 18inches at one point.
“You never expect to see this kind of fishing in December, but the weather has been so all over the place this year nothing surprises me – although I will say it was a bit of a shock for a couple of the anglers to be asking for second nets after just a couple of hours.”
