Competition anglers battle 20lb plus fish during commercial open.
The New Year got off to a flying start down on Somerset’s Viaduct Fishery when two anglers netted two separate 20lb plus carp in the first match of 2012.
Fishing the Bank Holiday Monday open on the complex’s Cary and Spring lakes, it was the competition’s winner Martin Preston who took the bigger fish, a specimen of 21lb 11oz. Not far behind though was Bobby Gullick with a fish of 20lb 11oz.
The bigger of the two helped its captor to take overall victory, with Martin weighing in a total of 111lb 1oz from eight carp to clinch the top spot. The venue-backed angler using popped-up bread on the bomb to fool all his fish.
Garbolino Blackmore Vale MG rod Bobby finished fifth with 58lb 3oz.
“Both fish are some of the biggest we’ve ever had at Viaduct in open matches,” fishery owner Steve Long told Match Fishing. “We did have a 24 caught last winter during a match, and they just keep getting bigger and bigger.”
