Battle on an out of condition Wye as final throws up a few surprises.
The final round of the Wye Winter league reached a nail-biting conclusion yesterday (February 19) as the top five teams battled it out for the top spot.
Going into the last leg it was the Welsh Wizards who were in front, a single point ahead of second placed Woodys with Dave Harrell Angling and Fox Match hot on their heels with just three points separating the top four teams.
On the day, confronted by a high and coloured river Wye, competitors had it all to do, but after 5hours fishing on the stretch of the waterway at Hereford favourites, Welsh Wizards, walked away with the win.
The big shock on the day was the dropping of the Woodys team from second to fourth place in the final fixture, with Dave Harrell Angling and Fox Match making the most of the team’s slide down the table to take joint second.
Individually on the day it was the ‘bleakers’ that proved to be the ones that made the right choice of tactics in the final. Topping the table with 18.15.0 of the species was Shaun Gould, while second-placed Lee green was close behind with 18.7.0.
“Once again it’s been a great winter league on the Wye,” said competitor and former Match Fishing magazine editor Dave Harrell. “Well done to the Welsh Wizards on a great victory. Woody’s slipping down to forth was a big shock, and just goes to show that even the best can be beaten at times.”
