Championship competitor numbers now complete following £1000 qualifier.
The final 40 anglers to go through to the 2012 Preston Innovations UK Championship have been decided following a hotly contested qualifier match at Baston Lakes in the midlands.
With the first 40 rods already having been chosen to fish for the coveted title through automatic qualification from last year’s competition, the qualifier at Barston saw some of the country’s best anglers battle it out for their place, and a £1000 winner’s prize on the day.
In the end it was Carl Williams who topped the pack, fishing from peg 124 to weigh in a total of 132lb 6oz. The Miracle Baits-backed rod targeted carp on the method feeder, and despite tough conditions stuck to his guns to record the win.
“I knew that to frame I needed to target the carp,” said Carl. “It all came together perfectly and I’m looking forward to getting back into the UK Champs field having missed out on automatic qualification by just a single point last year.”
Carl and the following 39 anglers will now go through to join the other 40 anglers to start the UK Championship competition in earnest, with the first round set for May 16 at Lindholme Lakes. Every man, consisting of the some of the best anglers in the UK, will have their eyes firmly on the £25k first place prize, as well as taking the highly coveted title from reigning champ Jason Le Bosquet.
“The UK Champs is hotting up quite nicely and with more top anglers gearing up for the rounds to come it certainly looks like being another great year, said Preston Innovations’ Mat Woods. “The event is still considered as one of the most significant in the country - who wouldn't want to be considered the UK Champion? I can’t wait for the first round of the competition."
