Italy have taken a narrow lead in the 2012 European Championship fished on the Guadiana River in Merida, Spain, with 29 points. Drennan Team England and Germany are both just two points behind on 31 points with Serbia on 33.
England's team was Steve Gardener, Alan Scotthorne, Sean Ashby, Will Raison and Des Shipp with Steve Hemingray as reserve. Sean struggled with a 15-pointer on Day One and looks likely to be replaced by Steve Hemingray going into Day Two. The rest of the team posted consistent points with Steve Gardener on three points, Alan and Des on four points and Will on five.
Bleak have been the main species, but the slider and long pole are also playing a part for carp and carassio. Even without Italian masters Falsini, Fini and Gabba actually fishing (due to being saved for the World Champs) the Italians look exceptionally good.
The other Home Nations have struggled so far with Ireland best in 11th place out of the 23 teams, followed by Wales in 14th.
