Leicester Sensas have won the Soar Valley Winter League, after rejoining the league following a year break. They beat second placed Matrix Dynamite Trentmen by a clear thirty points – giving them the choice of semi final venue when they are announced later this month.
The final round of the Winter League was forced to move on to the Loughborough Canal, as the River Soar was close to breaking its bank. Leicester Sensas made the most of a good draw to romp to an comfortable final round victory.
In the individual stakes, it was Pete Scott who made the most of a good peg, after drawing below Bishops Meadow Lock for the second time in the series. Pete made no mistakes, catching small roach, skimmers and perch, fishing five metres to hand on pinkies over groundbait for a total of 4kg 300g.
It was another Pete who took second spot, in the shape of Pete Marlow, who attacked his peg with bread punch and pinkies at 10 metres for a total of 3kg 370g from the boats at Bishops Meadow. In third place was Rob Jones with 3kg 050g. Rob fished squatts at nine metres
Although individual victory is always nice, the Winter League is really all about teams - with the top two finishes making it through to the semi finals. Throughout the series, Leicester Sensas and Matrix DynamiteTrentmen have battled it out with all the other teams trying to stop them. In the end, it was Leicester who took the verdict, averaging an impressive 1.75 points per man.
Leicester Sensas and Quorn also battled for the Knockout Cup Challenge Trophy. This is decided on overall team weight. Leicester Sensas also came top in this, beating Quorn 15kg 380g to 18kg 280g.
Leicester captain, Joff Woodgett commented: “I am over the moon that the team has won the league, as it is the culmination of well over a years hard work for me. After a tough year two seasons ago, I took the decision to break off for a year and attempt to regroup and strengthen the team - and after this years performance it has paid off in grand style. I hope we can build on this good result going forward.”
