This years Angling Trust Winter League Final has been confirmed as being held on the tidal River Trent, on the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire border. Sections used will include Besthorpe, and North and South Clifton.
Originally, the event was scheduled to be held on the non-tidal Trent Embankment in Nottingham, following a meeting between team captains last year. Sadly, the amount of red tape involved with holding the event at a city centre location made the event a non starter.
The Tidal Trent has built up a strong reputation as both a specimen water, and a great match fishing venue. Matrix Dynamite Trentmen’s Alan Henry is the man who runs most of the matches on the section, and explained: “The Tidal Trent fished really well last year, with some big bags of bream and barbel – and plenty of roach in the harder sections.
“The sections used could see a variety of fish being caught – and I would expect a feeder approach to dominate. The day of the match will see the tide top at around 8:00 AM, meaning the river will be running off and dropping through the day. On a normal river, this will mean that barbel will dominate – but if there is extra colour in the water then roach and bream could play a big part too!
It has the potential to be a really good match, and a weight in excess of 50lb could be needed to win. I would expect Kamasan Starlets to score well if they qualify, they won the National the last time it was on here and are an awesome river team. Other than that, I think the venue will reward any team who are prepared to put the time in and learn the river – and in particular get to grips with the feeder fishing on the venue.”
