Tom Scholey on a great weeks fishing, and a lesson learned the hard way. The highlight of my angling year is always the three or four White Acres Festivals that I fish. In my mind, they are without doubt the most fiercely competitive events in the match fishing calendar, attracting the sports very best names, and with each one being contested over five days, these are not events that you can win by just getting lucky. I suppose my best result in Cornwall was a win in the Preston Innovations Parkdean Pairs Festival back in June with Matt Godfrey – a great week, but at a little under a third of the size of the spring and autumn festivals, hardly as prestigious.
Matrix ace takes on top Midland venue. One of the country's top anglers, Grant Albutt, has taken on prolific Midlands water, Shatterford Lakes. Situated in a valley on the Bridgnorth Road (A442) only 10 minutes from Kidderminster and Stourbridge, Shatterford Lakes was established in 1972, and over the years has developed into a great specimen and match type venue. Grant explained: "When the opportunity arose to take on Shatterford, I knew I had to take it.
New signings for Maver backed team. Maver North West are pleased to announce two brand new additions to the already formidable squad. Former England International Stef Gent and former Drennan star Jon Jowett (picture attached) have recently sided with Steve Crossley's Maver North West squad in a bid strengthen the team even further and increase the team's chances of success in major competitions. The team, which have built up a fearsome reputation over the last few years thanks to a series of good results on canals and other natural venues, are regarded as one of the country's best up and coming teams.
Massive carp on the feed. It is thought that Andy Leathers has taken an early lead in the 2013 Parkdean Masters Final, after banking three carp, all believed to be approaching double figures. Ed Warren on peg 23 is also said to be in a strong position, with two good carp in the net. White Acres Fishery manager, Clint Elliott said: “As I walked along the bank this morning, it was obvious that there were a lot of fish moving in between pegs 16 and 23, where the wind has been blowing quite strongly for the last few days.
All still to play for in £25,000 final. Everything is still to play for as the Parkdean Masters Final nears its midway point. Although early leader, Andy Leathers has continued to catch well, and is still leading the race, the number of big fish feeding means that a handful of bites could swing the match in any direction. As it stands, it is estimated that Andy has around 50lb, which puts him around 20lb in front of second placed Lee Kerry, who is admitting to 30lb.
Late run challenges the leader. Middy backed ace Ben Fisk has enjoyed a good run of F1 carp, and is thought to be pushing close to the leader, Andy Leathers, as the Parkdean Masters Final comes to an end. Leeds rod Ben, has started catching good sized F1s very regularly, fishing long pole shallow with pellets. When asked how much he had, Ben told our man on the bank that he thinks he has 50lb, with Andy Leathers admitting to 60lb.
