With 2018 arguably heralding the beginning of a new era for Maver, we are delighted to confirm the signing of none other than England Feeder Team Manager, Tommy Pickering.
Originally from South Kirkby, the 62-year old Doncaster-based rod is no stranger to most having established himself as a household name on the back of an extremely decorative angling career spanning more than five decades. In that time, Tommy has fished at the sports highest level amassing an incredible selection of silverware from both domestic and international events including team and individual accomplishments.
Tommy’s angling career showed a great deal of promise early on with the then seventeen (17) year old enjoying numerous successes at club level.
We join Darren Cox on the bank to find out just how he won the Feeder Masters trophy.
As I’d fished my last qualifier this year for Feeder Masters 2017 I had resigned myself to not reaching the final – I was due on holiday and had no more chances left. However, a ticket came up for Bough Beech while I was away sunning myself with the family; it was only three days after we returned but I grabbed it. My partner in crime, Si Fry, also had a ticket so at least we could travel together.
Spliced-Tip Special!
Over a year ago my good friend Adam Richards rang me with an excited tone in his voice. He had received a sample of a new rod designed for river fishing. Adam has turned into quite the river angler over the past few years and he was quick to tell me that they were Sphere rods too!
Sphere has been an interesting concept. Browning has essentially produced some of the finest rods on the market and more recently one of the very best poles ever made.

The Best Yet?
Is the Daiwa TDX the best reel ever made? Joe Carass thinks it might just be! I didn’t know what to expect when I received the new TDX to test. The previous black model was a huge hit and I have used the cheaper TDR models in my fishing for the best part of a decade. However, other than the recent TDR, I haven’t used one of the latest Daiwa reels.
Firstly, let’s take a look at the TDX and the technology involved.
Rob Wootton discusses the lessons learnt from a tremendous week in Ireland.
I’ve just returned from another really enjoyable trip to Ireland; this time my destination was Inniscara lake down in the south of the country and the competition was the annual FeederFest, sponsored by ale giant Guinness.
As the name suggests this event is a feeder-only affair and given the lake’s vast stocks of roach and skimmers, fishing at short range is normally the name of the game. Last year’s event saw me finish in fifth place, not bad considering 100 top feeder anglers were in attendance, but even so I was still keen to improve on this result.
With so many competitions now on commercial fisheries our rivers have had a bit of an extended break I feel. Some very warm summers have meant our natural waters have had some successful spawning years and now the rivers are as good as they have ever been.
One style of fishing that I was brought up on was the waggler! It’s a method that on its day is unbeatable! It’s one of the most enjoyable ways of catching fish and a method that when mastered can bring some of the very best results.
As a match angler most people would expect anglers like myself to spend all my spare time searching for just matches, but as much as I like my competitions, I like to spend my spare time honing my tactics so I can put into practice what I’ve learnt and hopefully to good use during a competition.

I’m often asked if I’m bitter that there isn’t more money to be made from angling, for certainly had I enjoyed the same success in golf or football that I have in angling I would be a wealthy man today. To be honest I don’t think about it, I’m 52 years old and I can honestly say it’s been a marvelous party. I’ve travelled the world, made some wonderful friends and I’m a happy man.
Angling has been very good to me, wherever I go in the country I’m made welcome and I’ve made a living for the past 20 years from doing something I adore, that I think makes me a rich man indeed.
Joe Carass checks out a new feeder range that is finding its way into many feeder anglers’ collections in recent months!
We are well and truly moving toward an era of feeder fishing, and just like with pole fishing, niche feeder manufacturers are cropping up all over the place.
Having fished Ferry Meadows regularly earlier in the year I was looking for various feeders to have in my locker.
Rob Wootton had some rather nifty looking models in his feeder collection and I just had to find out more (not that Rob wanted me to know what they were!). Luckily I had a feature planned with Simon Willsmore and it just so happened that he had started to distribute the feeders throughout the UK.
