Old Ghost Groundbaits, Pastes & Sausages

I have no problem telling you that I was initially sceptical about Old Ghost. It was a range of products that I saw last October at the Tackle & Guns Trade Show. But, up until the end of June this year, I’d not seen any of it in the flesh!
The fact that you couldn’t get hold of the product after such hype, and the uncertainty over how yet more ‘foreign’ baits would be received, were the sources of my scepticism. I didn’t even think it would make it to UK soil, but it’s here!

As with any new firm there is, no doubt, a battle lying ahead of the China-based bait giant if it’s to make an impact. Pleasingly, though, the baits look good, smell right and seem very ‘fishy’. Early indications are positive, it would seem, and it’s not all that often the Match Fishing team praise product so quickly. These are baits we’re all looking forward to using.

The packaging is eye-catching, yet functional, and offers its target species and/or intended usage in no uncertain way. No mystery, magical number or second-guessing, which is exactly the right approach for today’s market.

The Old Ghost Range
A contradiction of sorts, but ‘extensive yet precise’ would be about the best way to describe Old Ghost’s product portfolio.

There are six groundbaits (all in 1kg bags) including Match Carp, F1 Match, Specimen Carp, Green Alga, Krill and Bream; seven pastes including Krill, Snail, Strawberry and Margin plus three ‘Magic’ pastes (Bloodworm, Maggot and Strawberry), and four Powdered Natural Attractants – Silkworm Chrysalis Meal, Krill Meal, Protein Binder and Maggot Meal.
There are also four Hook Bait Sausages – Squid, Bloodworm, Snail and Corn. And, finally, there are three 60g tubs of powdered additives – Supreme, Vanilla and Strawberry – available as well as two 550g bottles of PVA-friendly concentrated liquid additives in Krill and Mussel.

Hook Bait Sausage
Sticks of bait sausage designed to be used as hook bait for pole, waggler and feeder fishing. I’m told that Old Ghost-backed Will Raison has been enjoying success on this bait. They’re a great, easily accessible concept that’s likely to be received with open arms.

Pastes
The Strawberry and Krill pastes are supplied in 150g bags, while the Margin and Snail versions come in 300g bags. The four pastes are easy to mix and are the same ultra-successful ones as used in China. Paste is the number-one hook bait there for their comparative species so you can be assured these are purpose-built for the job in hand.
They’re very easy to mix – the perfect texture can be achieved by blending 1:1 with water.
There are also three firmer Magic pastes available in 100-120g tubs.

The Groundbaits
Designed with specific purposes in mind, Old Ghost has invested considerable time, with input from Will Raison, on launching a concise range. Not only would a huge range of baits put the shops off stocking it, but it would cause confusion among anglers, too. The six groundbaits are specifically targeted and should go down a storm. We’ve torn the bags open here and had a good rummage – the most noticeable aspect is each of the bait’s unique smells. They seem ‘right’, if that makes sense? No doubt we’ll be reporting our further findings in future issues. There are red, yellow, natural and green groundbaits in the range.

Krill Craze
Krill is, of course, a part of this range. This has been the big bait over the last couple of seasons although its use in angling has been enjoyed for many, many years. The quality of krill used in today’s baits has recently been thrown into question, but be assured that Old Ghost’s is as good as it comes.

Ingredients
All of the ingredients are listed on the reverse of the packs so you know exactly what you’re using.

Still To Come
Waiting in the wings for launch are a few more exciting products. We’ll be looking at these in a future issue, once available, but so far all we know is that you can expect EPS expander pellets in 4mm and 6mm sizes and both Snail and Krill flavours, Meltz mini boilies and a range of additive sprays.

The Conclusion
Great first impressions – the proof of the pudding really will be in the eating.
