Shimano Aero Spin Reel

The Perfect Reel?
Joe Carass gives the Shimano Aero Spin reel the once-over… that’s right, a spinning reel for match fishing!
You may recall I had the chance to use and review the Shimano Aero Match last year. It is a superb reel and fantastic for all-round match fishing – particularly float fishing. When I was asked to have a look at the Aero Spin I was excited but reluctant to change from the Match. However, two of the Spin models were already in the post and I couldn’t wait to see how they differed from the original.

You may be wondering: “Why the hell is Joe using a spinning reel?” and that’s a very good question. Well, the slow retrieve of the spinning version means that the reel’s actual winding power is cranked up! It is much slower than the Aero Match but it is extremely powerful – ideal for battling with carp on commercial waters.

This increased winding power not only makes playing fish easier, but it also means reeling back large, empty feeders is a doddle. Many reels seem to struggle with this but the Aero Spin will soon get that feeder skipping across the surface.

I much prefer the single handle on this reel to the double version on the Aero Match. Although double handles are very good and, judging by the amount that I see on the bank, many anglers like them, for me a single handle just feels right – I suppose it is what I have got used to over the years.

If you’re in the market for a new reel, make sure you give this one a try. It may be a spinning reel but it is one of the best match fishing reels available!

The Knowledge

What Is It?
A new single-handled version of the fantastic Shimano Aero Match. With slowed-down gearing!

Who’s It For?
Anyone on the lookout for a top-notch reel that will do everything that you ask of it!

What’s It Like?
Stunning to look at with performance to match!

Gearing
To get the immense power from this gorgeous piece of kit, Shimano has slowed the gearing down to 4.8:1 as opposed to the much faster 5.2:1 of the Aero Match. This may not sound a lot but it does actually make a massive difference, and the winding power of these reels is just awesome!

Super Smooth
Because I am such a fan of using the drag, the silky-smooth front drag on these certainly ticked all the right boxes for me. It is extremely responsive and smooth and really does perform well when playing fish.

Wide Boy!
As with the Aero Match, the Spin has a wide spool. This makes casting an absolute joy as the line pours freely from the spool. The line lay on these spools is perfect and really helps with the casting performance.
