Mild weather sparks January feeding frenzy!
Venues up and down the country have been enjoying an unseasonal run of form, as mild temperatures have stirred the fish in many of our lakes, rivers and canals into feeding. Match weights soared to over 100lb at many venues, as carp, F1s and skimmers went on the hunt for bait.
Pole Fishing Editor, Jon Arthur was one angler lucky enough to find himself on fish in the Tunnel Barn Farm Teams Of Four Winter League, and made the most of a good draw by winning with a 131lb net of F1s!
He commented: “Our Match Fishing Drawbags team really lived up to its name this week – I pulled us out four fliers! I was over the moon with peg 31 on House Pool, and fortunately there was a big ball of F1s in front of me. I caught most of my fish on maggots shallow, though I also dobbed a few fish.
It is testament to the quality of the sport at Tunnel Barn Farm that the top three weights came off three different lakes – with Chris Allen’s second placed 88lb 11oz net coming from Extension Pool, and Paul Yates coming third from top pool with 87lb 1oz.”
Another place to head for a bumper days winter sport is Nottinghamshire’s Lakeside Fishery near Ranskill. The venue has taken the measure of stocking 2,000 of trout into its main match lake – and the addition of the game fish seems to have spurred every other species of fish into feeding.
The winner of this weekends Winter League match was Rotherham rod Carl Sweatnam, who banked a massive 95lb! “It was an amazing days fishing – the fish were quite literally queing up, and the more I fed the more I seemed to catch! In total, I went through 4 pints of maggots, with most of my fish coming up in the water! I didn’t expect the sport to be quite as good as it was, and so I started the session on a light rig, but once I realised just how many fish were present, I switched to a heavier summer carp rig and really started to empty it!”
Anglers are advised to make the most of the unseasonably warm temperatures while they can, as a colder front is expected to move in from next week.
