Daiwa’s original TDR reels, introduced at the 2008 trade shows, were nothing short of an overnight success story! And, I have word from Daiwa Sports’ HQ that they were its best-selling match reels of the modern era – no wonder that they were, and still are, such a popular sight on the bankside! Big boots to fill for the new version then, but just how is it different? Is it simply a tarted-up version that’s received a lick of paint and a few cosmetic enhances? No, no, no – it’s so much more! The instantly recognisable blue livery stays the same, but the reel’s features are what gives this new model the WOW factor. As some of you will know I am a fan, and user, of the incredible Daiwa Certates. But the TDR, for half the price, offers many of the same features including what I believe to be one of the most important for reel longevity – the Mag Seal. In Daiwa’s tech speak this delivers “a water impermeable liquid seal around the rotor and main shaft, protecting the mechanism from ingress of water and debris.

Drennan backed boys clinch victory. Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths have won the river Thames Championship. The match was fished by 18 teams of six on the Thames from Lechlade through to Tadpole bridge near Bampton. With the recent rain the river had some much needed flow and colour, and the fish wanted to feed – but the very strong winds, mainly downstream, made presentation very difficult and this kept the weights down.
Foreign final for free to enter teams of four league. The Sensas Challenge is once again running a qualifying league in the North of England. Headed up by match organisers Lee Kerry and Tom Scholey, the league has been set up to ensure a series of Saturday matches are available for those wanting to fish natural baits, keeping bites coming all through the winter. “We wanted to run a league that stacked the odds in favour of anglers getting plenty of bites.
Trent plays host to prolific river festival. Dave Webb has won this years Burton Angling Festival, after what proved to be a good weeks fishing for many on the roach packed waters of the upper River Trent. Although conditions weren’t too good for the sell-out field - a very cold and clear river coupled with blustery winds made float presentation difficult in some areas. Those anglers pegged in the more sheltered areas benefited with the vast shoals of roach willing to feed.

The 2013 Midland Angler Of The Year is Graham Beckwith fromCoventry.
Forty anglers contested the event on a tough Barston Lake chilled by the previous day's heavy rain. The contest was split into two three-hour sessions (feeder only in the morning; pole only in the afternoon) with anglers fishing the same peg for each heat. No-one scored a perfect two points so it was a tie for first between Graham and Steve Wilson, both on three points.
