DIRTY SECRETS!

dirty secrets

Des Shipp takes us to Woodpecker Pool at Stafford Moor Fishery to explain how he doctors his approach when quality fish in heavily coloured water are his target.

Although not every lake is the same, a lot of lakes at commercial fisheries can be thought of as being similar – in that they are relatively shallow (less than six feet) and built either on the side of valleys or in valley bottoms, where water and silt collect naturally.
As a consequence, whenever we have rain, these lakes tend to colour up quickly because sediment washes into them and the movement of the water causes silt to disperse throughout the water column.
We have all seen it – when the water turns a muddy tea-like colour. Often, the fishing seems to switch off when this happens. Whether it’s because there is more natural food that has been washed into the lake, the silt sickens the fish, the reduction in visibility means the fish don’t want to feed or a combination of the three, I am not sure, but the effect is notable when you flick through the match result pages.
So how do you get around this? What can you do to get the best from an out of sorts, coloured commercial?
There is no one simple answer, but by adapting your approach to include several key attacks, you can give yourself the best possible chance of doing well.

If In Doubt, Attack!

if in doubt attack

Callum Dicks has enjoyed a blistering run of form this winter, thanks to an ultra-positive commercial-fishery silver-fish attack! Here he explains his thinking behind it…
I used to be very reserved in how I would feed any swim in winter. After all, it stands to reason that because the water is cold, the fishes’ appetites are therefore reduced – so to feed any amount of bait sees you run the risk of filling the fish up, and not catching them.
