Fifteen anglers fished an open at Goodiford Mill on Sunday, with a welcome weekend of Sun and low wind forecast it seemed like spring had arrived at last so everyone was looking forward to a good days fishing.
In total over 1,200lbs of Carp were caught, an average of 85lb a man but it was match of two halves with the majority of anglers catching well in the beginning then struggling towards the end. The silver fish could be seen spawning in the margins and were notable in the absence from everyone's catches so one theory was the carp had switched to feeding on their spawn in the afternoon.
Winner on the day was Zac Newton (Team ALS) with a total of 174lb to take the £76 prize for 1st from peg 4. Starting on the pole at 16m fishing 18 inches deep over the shallow bar he loose fed 8mm pellet and was into the carp quickly. He continued to catch well, managing to draw the fish closer to 14m increased his rate and had an estimated 140lb after 2 1/2 hours but by the half way mark his swim had gone all but dead.
Runner up was Wayne Mitchell (Team Jinx) from the form peg 37 in the top corner with a total 142lb catch to take the £51 prize. Wayne used 8mm pellet and alternated between the straight lead and waggler fished long towards the margin to buck the trend and catch carp steadily. Final place in the prizes was a close result with Mark Hayman pipping his brother Steve by just 2oz to win £36 for a catch of 135lb 6oz. Mark fished his favoured pellet waggler tactic just past and on the shallow bar using 8mm pellet and had a good start along with Ade Croft on peg 1, both anglers landing an estimated 80lb after 3 hours. With the bites all but dried up for over an hour he cast long to the point of the island to find the fish again.
