Marukyu Jpz 10mm

Joe Carass checks out the latest bait development from Japanese bait giant Marukyu.

Is there such thing as a wonder bait? Over my years in angling I have seen all manner of weird and wonderful baits come along that are supposedly the ‘next big thing’, and guaranteed to put more fish in the net. But let’s be honest, most of these things catch the angler and not the fish and most are no more successful than the last big thing.

When I first saw JPz I must admit to thinking that same thought that I’d had many times before. However, after hearing Roy Marlow explain the benefits of these new hookers I just had to put my preconceptions to one side and give them a go. I often scan the internet forums to see what gossip is going around and I couldn’t fail to notice the amount of fuss JPz were causing. There was page after page on the subject and for once I thought this was fantastic, as at least it was a product that was getting people talking, and judging by most of the replies they had been catching their share of fish too!

The original JPz were 6mm in size and have been perfect for pole and feeder tactics. I have told this story before but my first chance to really use these was on a review day at The Glebe. I had been struggling for bites all morning until Roy actually came and sat with me and brought me some Marukyu groundbait and a jar of JPz. I fed the groundbait, hooked on a JPz and then awaited the response; suddenly I latched into some quality skimmers. I couldn’t believe it and just had to give them another go, and I have since experienced several other occasions when I have caught fish on JPz when everything else has failed.

I have to say that I wouldn’t go to a match without them now. What I have found is that I tend to catch on other baits and then as soon as I feel my swim dying, I slip a JPz on and the float nearly always buries with a quality fish.

The only downside that I could see was the lack of a larger-sized bait, so I was excited when I saw a larger, 10mm version due to be released. And, finally, we have some!
They are still the same EBI flavour, which has a sweet fishy smell and a lovely red colour. They are a difficult texture to describe as they are almost like a piece of jelly yet they are incredibly resilient – you can really squeeze these pellets, yet they always bounce back to their original shape.

You can hook these pellets any way you want but these new larger ones lend themselves perfectly to being hair rigged. I can see all kinds of applications for them – they look fantastic for bomb fishing but will also be great for Method work, as well as for pole fishing where the original 6mm versions might not be big enough.

To sum up then, it would be crazy not to have a jar of these in your bag. They may not be a wonder bait that literally doubles your catches overnight, but they will catch you extra fish throughout your session. At the end of the day that is what match fishing is all about; catching those extra fish to give you the edge at the weigh-in, and these pellets definitely give you the edge!
