Stainy Success?
It’s that time of the year again when the team all get together to practice for the Angling Times Winter League semi final.
This year it is up at Woodlands Lakes Nr Thirsk. Saturday saw me visit the venue for the first time this year, I was kind of hoping to draw on a pile of carp but that hope was short lived when I pulled out Peg 7 on Partridge. My end of the lake was flat calm when setting up, whilst the other end had a lovely ripple on it and I was sure that end would be where the carp were.
And so it proved with two out of the top three framers drawing down there. My match was very interesting and I was pleased with my 20lb of roach that was second in my section, I was just beaten by Rob Perkins who had 20-9-0 more or less opposite me. I’d learnt an awful lot and know that if I draw in the harder sections I should be able to put together a good weight of silvers. Fingers crossed that I land on some carp next week!
Fred Kay Individual league – Final round
As anyone who has followed my blog will know, I was lying second in the league with this match to go. I was really looking forward to it but I was also aware that a good draw was needed, as I had to catch 5lb more than league leader Jonny Plows to win the league. Yet again my drawing arm let me down when I pulled out Peg 231 on the scrub fields section. This is an ok section but I didn’t really have a chance to trouble Jonny as the best weight from these pegs this year has been around the 12lb mark.
Nevertheless I was determined to have a nice days sport and with Lee Kerry and Alan Scotthorne also drawing this section I would have a good match in store. I went with the three-line bloodworm approach again that served me so well last week but once again put a bread line in again. I had a lovely match and had bites all day, Lee was catching well so I was always kept o my toes but I knew his fish were smaller than mine.
At the weigh in I put 13-9-0 onto the scales to win the section with Lee weighing in 12-10-0 for second in the section. I was really pleased with my match and felt that I’d done all I could from the area.
I ended up finishing second in the league, and pocketed a nice £300 and with Lee coming third, he added another £200 to the kitty. A final well done to league winner Jonny Plows, who after winning round one with a fantastic 26lb was always going to be hard to catch up!
