Join The Elite! Joe Carass gives his verdict on the awesome new Maver Elite Carp 4 pole – the new flagship offering that has really got people talking. Maver has introduced two ranges of poles for 2014, both of which are being sold through its superb Centre of Excellence initiative, whereby some products can only be purchased from a nominated Maver Centre of Excellence tackle shop. Maver’s flagship Signature range are stunning poles aimed at the all-round angler. However, the poles that really grab my attention are the brand’s Elite Carp range.

Alex Bones has a glance at Shimano’s latest marvels – the AR-C Aero CI4+ reels. The first thing that’ll strike you if you get the chance to pick up one of these magnificent pieces of engineering is the weight… or lack of it, more to the point! It’s like an Aero Match that’s been on a leafy-lettuce crash diet. However, the remarkable part is that the CI4+ material that’s used is 250 per cent stronger than Shimano’s already impressive CI4 material, while also being 20 per cent lighter than its XT-7 graphite! While that may all sound like a bunch of letters and numbers there is some real science behind what Shimano has managed to achieve, which, among other benefits, makes it completely impervious to water (even saltwater) and rust. Deriving from the company’s Japanese spinning roots, this is a super high-performance reel designed to rival almost anything out there for float or feeder applications.

Joe Carass explains why two rods from Preston Innovations have stood the test of time!I remember sorting my kit out for my first-ever trip to White Acres. Filled with excitement, I had asked for advice on the tackle I would need and top of the list was a Preston Innovations Mini 11ft Float rod. Being the keenster that I am, I made sure I bought the rod ready for my first trip to ‘pellet-waggler heaven’, as it was at the time. Needless to say, my first trip there was something of a disaster.

Drennan ace qualifies for two big finals in as many days. Drennan rod, Dan Varney has enjoyed a weekend to remember, after qualifying for both the Evesham Championship, and the Wychavon Championship finals in successive matches. Even more remarkably, Dan did so from the same peg! After finishing second in the 83-peg Evesham Championship qualifier on Saturday, Dan drew the same number for Sunday's match, Peg 36 below the mouth of the River Isbourne. This time he went one better than his previous day’s performance, however, winning the match with an 11-5-0 net of chub, chublets and perch.

MAS rod banks four bream for Evesham glory. MAS rod Vince Callaghan took top spot in the first Evesham Championship qualifying match of the season, after drawing the fancied end Peg 1 at the top of the Crown Meadow. Vince of Windsor, Berkshire, adopted a positive approach throwing in 10 balls of groundbait on his pole line and fishing worms and maggots over the top. He tempted four good bream, plus a host of smaller fish for a 17-14-0 total.

River legend, Paul Glenfield books his place in Wychavon Final. Oxford-based river ace, and Match Fishing regular, Paul Glenfield has booked his place in the Wychavon Final after winning the first Evesham Festival qualifying match of the year. With the river carrying a tinge of extra colour and a healthy pace, the Warwickshire Avon threw up some very pleasing weights. Paul caught three bream, and around 5lb of smaller skimmers and perch on chopped worm tactics from Peg 1 at the top of the Crown Meadow.

Annual random pairs match in memory of Jenny Hamlington and departed friends of Tunnel Barn Farm. Jenny and Mike Hamlington built the fishery together, over the years, from a small pond which became the Bottom Pool. The venue has continued to grow and flourish into the super-popular complex of today. The memorial match will be held on Tuesday, July 8th and the cost is £10 per person with an additional, optional £10 super pool for those who wish to enter it.
